Random black and white on a stormy day…
July 24, 2008 – 6:41 pm
A few people have asked if this is where I live and the answer is yes!
I live near the beach in Waikiki, south of Rockingham. I love the lifestyle down here, the foreshore in the summer with the kids, the proximity to the South West and to Perth (30 mins up the freeway) and I’ve been working in schools in this area since the beginning of 2005. I also met my husband and moved down here to be with him, formerly a Fremantle girl. The majority of my clients are from the central Perth area so it poses no barrier to me to live here.
I love Point Peron, Penguin Island and all the beaches and the stunning beauty of the salt lakes. As much as I love Fremantle and would love to live there again one day, for the time being I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

My first homework challenge
July 18, 2008 – 11:49 pm
Last week I blogged about wanting photos for me, especially during the off-peak wedding season where I have a little more time for personal stuff. I want to have a fortnightly ‘homework’ assignment for the next couple of months to challenge me and keep me interested in my passion. Photography will never be just a job for me - it has become a way of seeing the world.
I remember when I became a film and TV editor after university and started to see films as independent shots, rather than a cohesive whole. For a while, it totally destroyed my enjoyment of movies: ‘Ooh, that was a bad cut’, ‘Nice natural wipe’, ‘I like how they’ve used the master shot’ etc etc. Eventually though it enhanced my film viewings and gave more meaning to the storyline.
My photography is the same. I have learnt to see through the frame, even if I do not have a camera. I believe it is very important, especially in the digital age, to try to get things right in camera. We don’t always do that and while Photoshop can help with a little cropping, a little saturation, converting to black and white and of course, loads of effects, it is still important to capture the moment correctly to begin with. My style revolves around ‘the moment’. I love colour, simplicity, emotion, strong black and whites and strong compositional elements.
When I started to learn about photography all those years ago I used black and white film and an old manual SLR. I developed the negatives and prints by myself. I miss those days sometimes. So I decided to set myself these ‘assignments’ to reminisce over those days and maybe get a little better behind the camera - seeing composition, seeing colour, seeing texture.
The following images are from a day out in the city. I took my son Toby to the Museum to see the dinosaur skeletons (we have been many a time) and the following are a collection from inside the museum and the external surrounds. It was a dreary day, with patches of rain and I love how the water droplets are on the leaves and flowers.
Ah, man and nature don’t mix sometimes…
I love the orange colour of this next one, especially against the dark green background.
Colour, glorious colour…
The texture of the bark against the green is lovely.
Inside the museum.
Over the next two weeks the challenge will be ‘Black and White’ - going back to those early days again. Now the important thing with b/w is composition, texture and light as you do not have strong colour to distract or overpower the image.
10 random things…
July 14, 2008 – 8:14 am
After reading about this on Clare Day’s blog (hello!) and OSP (photographer’s forum) I think I will let you in on a few random things about me. It’s my day off today (ha!) and the baby is asleep so I’ve got about ooh, ten minutes to kill.
1. I am a pommie. I was born in Birmingham, England and got ‘transferred’ when I was ten as my dad took a job opportunity here. So all my family apart from mum, dad and my little sis are back in the UK.
2. When I was 16 I nearly died in a horse riding accident at Pony Club. Never try to steer a horse when it is bolting out of control. I hit a tree at full gallop while the horse swerved. Lucky I was wearing a bloody good helmet or a short life I would have had. I still remember my dad running into the hospital ward, ‘You’re never riding a horse again young lady!’ (Sorry dad, still doin’ it!)
3. I singlehandedly took my eldest son Toby (when he was 4) on a round the world trip for seven weeks. I was a headstrong, independent single mum on a mission. Having babies shouldn’t stop you doing the things you want to do. Instead of seeing The Louvre, we went to the Museum of Natural History to see the dino skeletons - it’s no biggie. London nightlife, not for me - can you guess? That’s right: the Museum of Natural History. The pattern continued through Europe, the UK for Christmas, Toronto, Boston and the Big Apple to finish. One of the best things I have ever done and something Toby and I will always share.
4. I got married in Mauritius on the beach on a balmy Monday in April 2007. Words can’t explain how fantastic our trip was. I still feel like a newlywed!
5. I didn’t eat pizza until my late teens. Blame my parents - meat and vegies is all we ever had. My husband is currently trying to convert my tastebuds to Vindaloo curry. It just isn’t going to happen.
6. I am obsessed with films. Before I had my kids I would go up to 3 times a week to Luna to see weird arthouse films that none of my friends wanted to see. After Toby I went probably once a week. Now I go in the school holidays once every 3 months with hubby and kids in tow. Kung Fu Panda here I come. Just saw 3:10 to Yuma. Brilliant film! I’m a DVD girl now. boo hoo
7.I’m also obsessed with music. Not a day goes by that I don’t have a craving to hear some song or another. I spend waaaayyyy too much money in the iTunes store!
8. I have a hideous photo of me when I was 12 with glasses, braces, pink lip gloss and permed hair!!!!!!!! I can’t believe my mother hasn’t burnt it yet. OMG. That’s 1991 for you.
9. I like being by myself. I love being around others but not for extended periods of time. I once took a holiday down south to stay in my own cabin with no other people around and just went bushwalking and wrote short stories and a film script. Those were the days. I love my kids but sometimes I wish to go on a ’self-holiday’ again.
10. My dad gave me my first camera when I was about 14. He is a photographer as well and collected cameras. It was a completely manual film SLR and I used it up until only a few years ago. I will always treasure it. He also gave me a box full of his old photos and photos from his dad. It made me really value photography and how the art just transcends generations.
